Once the boat has been washed and cleaned thoroughly both on the outside and the inside, it needs to be prepared for winterisation. If you winterise boat outdoors, take away fabrics and any other equipment that are susceptible to mildew or corrosion when exposed to moisture and store them in a dry place, and arrange servicing for such equipment as necessary. You should not leave any mattresses or any other removable furniture, even life jackets, in the boat for the winter.
The same applies to electronic instruments. The best way to protect them against oxidation and thieves is to take them away from the boat and store them indoors in a dry place. If possible, remove also the batteries and store them in a warm dry place. Apply suitable anti-moisture and anti-corrosion spray on electrical and electronic connectors.
Ventilation
Secure the boat cover to make sure it remains in place but also allows air to circulate in the boat, as it is important to ensure efficient ventilation within the boat. This is why all doors, gratings and vent holes are left open for the winter. More effective ventilation can be ensured with a small electric fan, for example.
Heater
The use of heaters is not recommended during winterisation, because the temperature inside the boat should not be higher than outside it. Otherwise, moisture may condense into water and flow into the bilge, from where it vaporises into the warm air inside the boat, and - coupled with efficient ventilation - results in continuously high moisture.
Dome moisture absorbers
Dome moisture absorbers are often used to absorb moisture in the boat. For example, a moisture content of less than 50 per cent is too dry for mildew growth. Dome moisture absorbers are best placed in the boat’s nooks and crannies and the aft compartment that is difficult to access.
NOTE! The use of dome moisture absorbers does not make up for lacking ventilation – do not shut the cabin door even with dome moisture absorbers in place!
