If the boat and the outboard engine have been thoroughly serviced prior to winterisation, very little maintenance is required in the spring.

Before launching the boat, the plug naturally needs to be put back in place, but it is also a good idea to carry out a number of spring maintenance measures that enhance boating safety. If an official inspection is required for your boat, the on-board safety equipment will also undergo inspection. However, even if no inspection is mandatory, it is a good idea to check your boat’s equipment in the spring to ensure safety.

- Arrange servicing for the boat's fire extinguisher at an authorised service provider
- Check the best before dates on emergency flares and replace any outdated flares
- Check the number and condition of all life jackets: reflector strips, whistles, straps and buckles
- Make sure that there is a storm lantern with reserve fuel and a functional flashlight with a spare battery on board
- Ensure that the boat is equipped with all the necessary tools
- Check the electrical system for oxidation and moisture and provide servicing as necessary
- Check the condition and charge status of the boat's batteries
- Clean battery poles and connectors
- Check the radiator coolant and replace if necessary
- Check the condition of the water pump and the alternator's V-belts, and make sure you have replacement belts for any necessary belt changes.

In addition to the boat’s electrical bilge pump, there must be a functional manually operated pump on board.

NOTE! Arrange servicing for stoves, heaters and refrigerating machines, gas-powered appliances in particular, at an authorised service shop.

Spring inspection of an outboard engine

If servicing has been done properly prior to winterisation, the outboard engine requires only a few measures before clamping it on.

With a 2-stroke engine, burn off the fogging oil. With a 4-stroke, check the level of gear oil. Check the level of engine oil on either engine type. In addition, check that the propeller, spark plugs, hoses etc. are in place and securely fitted. Replace any fuel remaining in the fuel tank from the previous season.

During engine start-up, ensure that the cooling water starts streaming. After the start-up, the engine will exhaust more and thicker smoke than usual, as the fogging oil burns off.
